Getting on the Ballot for 2012

Here is information for ballot access for 2008.

As a Minor Party

Signatures Needed: At Least three percent (3%) of the electors who cast ballots for the office of governor
in the last general election (about 39,000). [§17-6-22(a)(1)]
Start collecting: Immediately: Here is a sample petition form to qualify as a Party. You need to change the date to November 6, 2012.
Filing Deadline: Primary Election Day.

General ballot access for independent candidates:

Other Information:
File with the secretary of state an original copy and a copy in digital format or other electronic format acceptable by the Secretary of State of the party’s emblem.

Political parties conducting presidential preference primaries may establish rules for the election so long as they are consistent with state law found in the Code of Alabama (1975).

Major or minor party qualifications for statewide ballot access:

Received more than 20% of the total votes in the state at the last general election (by this method only the Democratic and Republican parties qualify) [17-16-2]

Minor party qualifications for statewide ballot access:

Or file a petition with the Secretary of State containing signatures equal or exceeding 3% of the
electors who cast ballots for the office of governor in the last general election (in 2008, this equaled 37,513 signatures) [17-8-2.1]
Deadline: primary election day [17-8-2.1]

Primary ballot access:

Petition: 500 signatures total or 50 signatures from each congressional district [17-16a-3]
Deadline: March 1—March 15 [17-16a-3]
Party filing fee: Democrats — $2,000; Republicans — $5,000;

Deadline: August 31 [17-19-2]
No filing fees
Last day to withdraw from the ballot:
